I'm a history nut, and I don't apologize for being that way.  I love reading up on history and learning from the past. Here's a story I came across a few days ago on Wikipedia.  The FAA prohibits planes from breaking the sound barrier over land.  But before they made this rule official, they had to do some test.  These tests resulted in the Operation Bongo II in which 1,253 sonic booms were carried out over the OKC skies from February through July of 1964.

Starting on February 3, 1964, the first sonic booms began, eight booms per day that began at 7 a.m. and ended in the afternoon. The noise was limited to 1.0 to 1.5 pound-force per square foot (48 to 72 pascal) for the first twelve weeks, then increased to 1.5 to 2.0 psf (72 to 96 pascal) for the final fourteen weeks. This range was about equal to that expected from an SST. Though eight booms per day were harsh, the peak overpressures of 2.0 psf were an order of magnitude lower than that needed to shatter glass, and are considered marginally irritating according to published standards. The Air Force used F-104 and B-58 aircraft, with the occasional F-101 and F-106.

I love airplanes, and I love Oklahoma.  Just wished I lived back in 1964 to have been a part of this unique history.

Here's a video of an F-18 breaking the sound barrier.

January 2010 Winter Storm

For those of you who slept through it, Tulsa just went through a very large winter storm the past several days.  Preceded by an inch or two of ice (depending on the location in Oklahoma) on Thursday, there fell up to 7 or 8 inches of snow on Friday.  After our blizzard on Christmas Eve earlier this winter and the ice storm of Dec. 2007, most people were savvy enough to prepare for this week's storm.

By God's grace, most folks in the NW Oklahoma region did not suffer power outage (my sympathies for those in Lawton area).

Here are some pictures I snapped on my iPhone the past few days.

Both dogs were so engrossed with their bones that they just kept gnawing at them while the snow collected on their backs.

The drive home.  It is a two lane highway, but traffic was down to one lane.

The dog at home buried deep in her doghouse.  The snow collected pretty high on her little igloo.

This picture gives the best visual on the amount of snow that fell.

Icicles on the church building.

Oklahoma is changing the words to the State Song. It now goes like this:

SNOW…….klahoma
Where the cold front's sweepin' down the plain
And the piles of sleet, beneath your feet
Follow right behind the freezing rain.

SNOW…….klahoma
Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Travel home from work and hope some jerk
Doesn’t wreck our car in passing by!

We know we belong to the land
But it could use some more salt and more sand

That’s why we say…..WHOA!
We’re sliding the other way…….YIKES!

We’re only sayin’
You’re slick as snot SNOWklahoma
SNOWklahoma
SNOW-K-L-A-H-O-M-A

SNOWklahoma, SNOW-K!

At one of the Tea Parties in Tulsa, there was a big banner re-declaring the Declaration of Independence.  So many people wanted to sign it that they had to get another big piece of paper!

The Re-Declaration of Independence was given to Rep. Sullivan who promised to deliver it to Speaker Pelosi.  Here's the video of it:
